Like to bike? A great way to start the year is the annual Chilly Hilly Bicycle Race. The 33-mile route around Bainbridge Island kicks off the cycling season in the Northwest. For more information, visit the Cacade Bicycle Club Website.

You will find entertainment by local musicians, variety of homemade foods, creative arts and crafts, locally grown produce and plants. The Market is located between City Hall and the Bainbridge Performing Arts Center, in downtown/Winslow.

The Toe Jam Hill ½ Marathon, 10K race and 1-mile Fun Run are also held in April. The run starts and finishes at Bainbridge Island High School. You can get more information at either the Boys & Girls Club of Bainbridge Island or Island Fitness Website.

I would give you a date if I could but the Scotch Broom Festival and Parade is an impromptu event usually held sometime in May to celebrate our Pacific Northwest golden weed. As a member of the community, don't worry about missing the parade - word gets around.

July

Rotary Auction and Rummage Sales Event - Sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Rotary is the annual auction and rummage sale event. And it's a grand happening here on the Island. The live and silent auction is held at Woodward Middle School the Friday evening prior to the rummage sale. The rummage sale is also held at Woodward Middle School usually from 8:00 AM until closing at 2:00 PM. It is an all community event and not to be missed.

Grand Ol' Fourth of July and Community Celebration is more than an annual parade. It usually coincides with the annual Strawberry Festival (206-842-7402 for more information), street dance, booths of local arts & crafts, food, bike races, music and much more. Parade usually starts at 1:00 PM. You can get a specific list of events and times at the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce.

Sometime in July, the Mid-Week Farmer's Market opens from 4:00 PM to 7:00PM between City Hall and the Bainbridge Performing Arts Center, in downtown/Winslow and runs until Labor Day. Though there aren't as many arts and crafts booths on Wednesdays, it's an excellent time to select locally grown produce and flowers.

Bainbridge Island is known for its gardens and gardeners. The annual Bainbridge in Bloom is usually held sometime in July. Call (206) 842-7901 or email biahc@arthum.org for more information.

July 2005 was the first year for the Bainbridge Bluegrass Festival and Family Fun Fair and promises to be an annual event. Sponsored by Music Community Resources, it includes 8 hours of live Bluegrass music plus an early Americana Country Fair for the whole family. The Festival is held at Battle Point Park here on the Island.

August

August begins the annual Wednesday night series of Evening Concerts at the Waterfront Park. For more information, call (206) 842-2306 or go to the Bainbridge Island Parks Department Website.

Artists are a strong segment of the Bainbridge Island community. The Summer Studio Tour is usually held in August. It is a festive outdoor event where local artists open their studios while other artists join them in garden settings to display and sell their work. Pick up a map and drive or bike from one Island studio to the next. This is a great way to learn the neighborhoods.

September

Watch for the annual Great Zucchini Race usually held in September or early October. Zucchinis of all shapes and sizes are fitted with wheels, decorated, and pitted against one another on a special racetrack. The entries are also judged for creativity. Sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Farmers Market.

October

The annual Johnson Farm Harvest Fair is sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Parks department and is a great way to spend a family outing. Call Trust for Working Landscapes for more information (206) 842-5537.

The historic Bainbridge Gardens nursery hosts one of Kitsap County's most popular Halloween traditions - the Pumpkin Walk. Hundreds of people of all ages come to walk along Bainbridge Island Gardens Nature Trail, glowing with a grand display of nearly 300 lighted, carved pumpkins. The public is encouraged to carve pumpkins for the event.

Gather the kids and get dressed up to Trick or Treat in Downtown Bainbridge Island/Winslow. Businesses keep their doors open for little goblins and gremlins alike. Contact Bainbridge Island Downtown Association for more information.
